Blue Jays Fall to Lebanon Valley in Home Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team put up a hard fought match against the visiting Lebanon Valley Dutchmen, Wednesday evening inside Thompson Gymnasium but ended up falling, 3-1.

Lucy Stanek recorded her second double-double of the season, tallying 11 kills and 14 digs. Gracie Britten added 10 kills, two aces, and three block assists. Lucy Stern picked up a career-high 26 digs while Emma Bitner totaled 22 assists and eight digs.

The first set between Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley was tight as the teams' traded points. Etown then jumped ahead, 13-6 after a 9-1 run. Stanek, Leah Gormley, Ida Fisher, and Lesley each tallied kills in the run. The Blue Jays extended their lead by 10 after four consecutive points as two Britten kills sandwiched a Lesley kill. Two straight aces from Bitner brought Etown within five of set point. Through the end of the set the two teams went back and forth but Etown came up with the 25-13 win over the Dutchmen.

Set two again started tight but LVC went on an 11-1 run which doubled their lead to 14-7. The Dutchmen rattled off three straight, extending their lead to 18-10. Kills from Stanek and Fisher along with LVC errors brought Etown within four. Two Dutchmen errors kept the set going for the Blue Jays but Lebanon Valley would take the final two to win, 25-19.

Elizabethtown started off strong in set three as they took a 9-3 lead after rattling off eight in a row. After some back-n-forth, LVC smacked down three kills, bringing the score to 13-11. A kill from Bitner kept Etown in the lead before the Dutchmen tallied four straight to take the lead. Britten and Kate Barbon each added a kill bringing the Blue Jays lead to 20-18. After four in a row, one final kill from LVC earned them the 25-22 win.

Set four began close as a Gormley ace and then a Lebanon Valley error tied the set at seven. The Dutchmen gained momentum pulling ahead, 17-10 after five straight. Britten and Stanek kills book-ended four in a row for the Blue Jays as they trailed 19-17. LVC reached match point on a 5-1 run and after a Dutchman error, Lebanon Valley won, 25-19.

Elizabethtown will continue their home stint with a tri-match this Saturday, September 7 starting at 11AM with DeSales and York (Pa.).
