Home runs, defensive efforts get Blue Jays a win in extras at York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College baseball team hit three more home runs on Tuesday at York (Pa.), but also needed some big defensive efforts to get past the Spartans in extra innings. Etown would score three in the 10th and hang on to beat YCP, 7-4.

Elizabethtown (18-7) would take the lead early on thanks to the bat of Quinten Perilli. David Woolley led off with a base hit and Perilli followed with his 10th home run of the season, lifting a shot over the right field fence to make it 2-0 right away.

AJ Bednar added another run on in the fourth with his solo shot, this one went to left field to put the Blue Jays ahead 3-0.

York (Pa.) (16-8) hung in there, but also didn't do themselves any favors by leaving 19 men on base in the game. The Spartans did get a run back in the fourth to cut it to 3-1.

YCP got a run for a second consecutive inning with an RBI double in the fifth to make it 3-2. Bednar answered back for the Jays with an RBI single to score Bryce Keller, his second RBI of the game.

Woolwine made two fantastic diving catches in the sixth inning for Elizabethtown. He tracked down a ball to right center and laid out for the sprawling catch to surely save extra bases. Two batters later, he ended the inning with another diving catch in center.

York battled back to tie the game in the ninth after getting a run in the eighth.

Tied 4-4 in the tenth, the bats came alive for Etown as Woolwine smacked a two-run homer to left after RJ Agriss led off with a single to center. Later in the inning, JM Musser delivered an insurance run with an RBI base hit lobbed over third base and down the left field line to score Alex McClain, who had hit a double down the right field line.

Zach Silfies had the bases loaded as the first three Spartans reached base, but the graduate student calmly got the final three outs, two via strikeouts to end it. Keller made a diving catch on his backhand for the second out of the inning, which likely saved two runs for the Jays. Silfies then got the last batter swinging to close it out.

Elizabethtown will play at Moravian tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
