Blue Jays Breeze Past Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va.-- The Elizabethtown baseball team opened up the 2024 season with a 16-9 over Eastern Mennonite, Saturday. 

The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to rain. 

AJ Bednar went 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, along with a double and a triple. Quinten Perilli went 1-2 with two runs score and four RBI. Bryce Keller went 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kyle Mulville picked up the win on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings. 

The first inning was scoreless for both teams. Elizabethtown got on the board, scoring three runs in the second. RJ Agriss doubled to left center and then stole third. Keller brought home Agriss before Garrett Schwartzbeck doubled to score Keller. On a sacrifice fly, Schwartzbeck earned the third run. The Blue Jays tacked on two more runs in the third to extend their lead, 5-0 over the Royals. Eastern Mennonite scored their first run of the game in the third. 

With two outs in the fourth, David Woolley advanced to first and second via a walk. On a Bednar triple, Mason Woolwine and Woolley scored to bring Etown's lead to 7-1. Elizabethtown picked up one more run in the fourth to hold onto an 8-1 lead. Elizabethtown kept rolling as they tacked on four more runs in the fifth off of three hits. In the bottom half of the fifth the Royals scored their second of the game off a double. 

After two more runs in the sixth, Eastern Mennonite got it going in the bottom half as they scored four runs on five hits but still trailed Etown, 14-6. The Royals added their seventh in the seventh. In the eighth, JM Musser singled followed by a Perilli double. Musser scored on the Perilli double. After a ground out and a walk, Perilli scored on a wild pitch for Etown's final and 16th run of the game. Eastern Mennonite totaled two more runs to end the game 16-9. 

Elizabethtown is back at it tomorrow with a doubleheader at Bridgewater (Va.), with game one set for 11 a.m.
