ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team got off to a fast start and finished strong in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays took care of business on Senior Day at Wolf Field. Etown shut out Wilkes, 5-0, as
Drew Bridges recorded her first career hat trick in the game.
A third of the shots for Elizabethtown in the first quarter found the back of the cage, both off the stick of Bridges. First, it was
Hailey Meyer moving the ball down to the junior at the left post. She was able to beat goalie Olivia Wickel to make it 1-0 less than seven minutes into the game.
Shortly thereafter, Bridges struck again, this time from senior
Megan Meyer less than three minutes after her opening goal. Etown led 2-0 after one.
Wilkes didn't manage a shot in the first, but got into their attacking end a bit more in the second as the Jays narrowly outshot the Colonels, 5-3, in the second. Starter
Angelina Giglio-Tos did not allow a goal, though, as she made two saves to send her team into the half still with a two-goal lead.
Fellow senior goalie,
Rachel Murphy, came on to start the third quarter for Elizabethtown and finished out the game. She only needed one save during her 30 minutes.
The Blue Jays were held scoreless in the third, but the pressure ramped up again in the fourth as they put home three goals to breakaway from Wilkes.
Bridges finished off her hat trick less than two minutes into the fourth.
Riley Stephan added a goal a few minutes later, following up a saved shot onÂ
Rachel Troutman in front of goal. Then, late in the game,
Hannah Long found
Mia Fino down low at the post for the fifth and final goal of the game.
The five goals were a season-high for the Blue Jays. They will host their final regular season home game on Tuesday, October 22, at 7 p.m.
