ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team struck first against Catholic in a Landmark showdown at Wolf Field Tuesday evening, but the Cardinals scored twice and held off the Blue Jays in the fourth quarter to take home a 2-1 win over Etown.
Riley Stephan inserted a corner that
Rachel Troutman sent toward goal. The ball was off the ground and
Drew Bridges got her stick up and deflected it past Ella Bowman and into the cage to make it 1-0 nearly midway through the first quarter.
It didn't take long for Catholic to answer with a goal of their own off a penalty corner.
Angelina Giglio-Tos made an inital save, but the rebound stayed in the circle and the Cardinals were able to capitalize to tie the game.
Catholic then took the lead 1:33 into the second quarter. Each team only managed one shot in the second. Bridges had an attempt late in the quarter blocked as the game went into halftime tied 2-1.
Giglio-Tos made a sliding save early in the third to keep it 2-1. At the other end, Bridges had a pair of shots saved by Bowman.
Then, with under 30 seconds left in the third, the Jays had another corner chance as Troutman's ball hit the top of the crossbar and bounced out of play.
Mia Fino put a ball toward the cage that a Catholic defender cleared away before any chance of going in to tie it. Giglio-Tos made two more saves in the fourth to keep it a one-goal game, but Etown just couldn't find the equalizer.
Giglio-Tos made five saves in the game while Bowman had three for the Cardinals.
Elizabethtown will host Wilkes on Saturday, October 19, at 12 p.m.
