Renno, King rule the court for women's basketball in win at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Senior Jessica King and junior DaniRae Renno ruled the court for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon against Wilkes. King tied her career-high with 20 points and Renno recorded her second consecutive double-double as the Blue Jays beat the Colonels, 66-54.

The two starting forwards for Elizabethtown (9-4, 5-1 Landmark) were a force, combining to shoot 50 percent from the field (14-for-28). They were also a combined 10-for-10 at the free throw line and had as many rebounds as the entire Wilkes (5-8, 1-5 Landmark). King and Renno had 23 boards between them while the Colonels finished the game with 23 (4 team rebounds).

The first quarter has been a thorn in the sides of the Jays recently, but Saturday was a different story as they got out ahead of Wilkes and led 23-16 after one. King had the first eight points for Etown in the first.

The Colonels used some threes to stay within contact of the Blue Jays and kept it a two and three possession game. Six of Renno's eight first-half points came in the second quarter while King and Renno totaled seven rebounds in the second between them.

Elizabethtown did a solid job on the boards, only giving up three offensive rebounds which converted to only three second chance points for Wilkes. The Jays led 33-28 at halftime.

Two quick baskets made it a one-point game, but Etown never lost its lead in the third. King and Renno had 16 of the team's 18 third-quarter points. Lindsay Boyd's layup with 41 seconds left made it a 10-point game, 51-41, going into the fourth.

Allyia Kennedy had five straight points for the Blue Jays in the fourth as the lead grew to 15 midway through the final period. Since Elizabethtown was limiting Wilkes on the offensive end, the Colonels had little chance to get themselves back into the game. The hosts only took two three-point attempts, hitting one.

Etown also did its work at the free throw line throughout the game, finishing 18-for-19 as a unit. The Jays hit 32 of their 35 attempts for the week between two games, both wins.

King was two rebounds short of another double-double while Renno ended the day with 18 points and 15 rebounds after 10 and 13 a few days prior. Cyleigh Wilson, Makenna Mummert, Kennedy, and Ellie Fasick also hit from the charity stripe for EC.

Elizabethtown will play at Moravian next Friday, January 12, at 6 p.m.
