Women's basketball falls at #8 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had three in double figures, led by 19 from Summer McNulty and Makenna Mummert, but it was not enough as the Blue Jays fell on the road at eighth-ranked Catholic Wednesday night, 89-74. DaniRae Renno added a double-double for Etown.

Elizabethtown (14-6, 10-3 Landmark) withstood an early storm from the Cardinals as they got out ahead 15-8 through the first five minutes of the opening quarter. The Blue Jays would finish the first on a 13-5 run to take a one-point lead into the second, 21-20. Down a point with time winding down, Lindsay Boyd's buzzer-beating layup gave Etown the late lead.

Catholic (20-0, 13-0 Landmark) used the deep ball to get back into the lead early in the second as four straight makes from the floor were from three and they led 34-28 with 4:08 to go before the half. Mummert grabbed her own miss with under a minute left and got the follow-up to go to cut an eight-point deficit down to six, but the Cardinals answered back seconds later to restore the eight-point advantage and take that into the half, 42-34.

Mummert and McNulty helped get a nine-point deficit down to four after Catholic dropped in another three early in the third. The Cardinals were 9-for-16 from three-point range in the game. The third would belong to Catholic, though, as they outscored Etown 23-15 to go into the fourth ahead by 16.

Consecutive baskets right away in the fourth pushed the Cardinals' lead up to 21, the largest lead of the game, but there was no quit in the Jays. Mummert's layup got it back down to 10, but unfortunately for Elizabethtown that came with less than a minute to go.

Keegan Douglas led all scorers with 21 for Catholic. Renno finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica King added 10 boards for the Jays.

Elizabethtown will host Moravian on Saturday, February 3, at 4 p.m.
