Women's basketball taken down in overtime by Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's seven-game win streak to start 2024 was snapped on Saturday in an overtime loss at Susquehanna, 65-64. Summer McNulty led the Blue Jays with a team-high 22 points.

A tough start from the field allowed Susquehanna to get out in front as they led 15-10 after the first quarter and 30-22 at the half.

The River Hawks led by as many as nine points in the third quarter, but Elizabethtown chipped away over the duration of the third and Ella Gordon's jumper with 1:08 left tied it at 40-40. Neither side scored the remainder of the quarter as they went tied into the fourth.

It was an extended 8-0 run when Allyia Kennedy connected on the first points of the fourth for the Jays. Her jumper was good in the paint. Kennedy would finish with 10 points off the bench, her second consecutive game in double figures.

Etown led by as many as seven with 4:33 to go, but as they had done, Susquehanna did back to them, as the Hawks got level with 45 seconds remaining in the game and took the lead on Julia Roth's free throws. She had a game-high 29 points.

Down two but in the bonus, Cyleigh Wilson was fouled with eight seconds left. The senior hit both from the free throw line to tie the game at 53-53 and sent it to overtime as Roth's jumper with time expiring was no good.

Elizabethtown led early in the OT period thanks to McNulty's and-one that came off a Kennedy steal at the defensive end. The game would stay a one-possession game, though it went back and forth between the sides. Wilson canned a three with 1:37 left that put EC ahead by two, but Susquehanna responded with two of their own at the other end to make it 61-61.

Roth would hit freebies down the stretch as the River Hawks were up by four with 23 seconds to go. Wilson hit another three soon after to make it a one-point affair. A Blue Jays' foul sent Zoie Maffei to the line, which turned out to be the right player to foul as she missed both attempts and left the Jays a chance to win it.

Susquehanna's Julia Pinckert blocked a shot attempt by Etown and a last-ditch effort with a second to go wouldn't fall and the River Hawks held on for the overtime victory.

The Blue Jays will look to rebound on the road at Catholic on Wednesday, January 31, at 7 p.m.
