ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball got off to a slow start as Juniata hung around for one half before the Blue Jays turned the game on its head in the third quarter to defeat the Eagles soundly in the end, 74-50.
Allyia Kennedy had a career-high 14 points in the game and was one of three in double figures for Etown, led by
Cyleigh Wilson's 15 points.
Summer McNulty added 14 for EC.
Juniata (2-16, 1-10 Landmark) came to play Wednesday night and they stifled the Blue Jays through the first half, though Etown's second quarter was stronger than the first. The Eagles got out to a 17-14 lead after one.
Makenna Mummert and
DaniRae Renno traded baskets and assists to start the second quarter for Elizabethtown (14-4, 10-1 Landmark). Renno fed Mummert off her backdoor cut to the basket and then the next time down, Mummert dished to Renno in the low post for two that gave the Jays the lead, briefly, at 18-17.
The Eagles did sneak back in front, but not for long as Wilson dropped in her first three of the game, giving her at least one in every game (18 games) this season. Mummert struck not long after a Juniata miss as Renno collected the board, got the ball quickly to Wilson who threw a lead pass up the floor to Mummert for the transition bucket. Wilson would hit her second trey of the game later in the quarter to give her at least two threes in 15 games this season and her fifth straight game of at least two from deep.
The Blue Jays led by five at halftime after outscoring Juniata 18-10 in the second.
A close game at half was no longer close after three because Elizabethtown came out on a mission and put its stamp on the game over that next 10 minutes. They held the Eagles to just 2-for-18 from the floor while outscoring them 23-4 in the third, led by Wilson's seven third-quarter points and
Jessica King's five points and six rebounds. Juniata didn't score its first points until the 4:42 mark of the third and by that point, Etown had built up a 14 point lead after Wilson's jumper. All but one of Elizabethtown's third-quarter baskets came from outside the paint.
Kennedy, who had six points in the first half, was an efficient 6-of-7 on the night and totaled six fourth-quarter points to lead the way off the bench. She was 2-for-2 from the floor and also knocked down a pair at the line.
Ella Gordon,
Taylor Huyck,
Ellie Fasick,
Cass Peris and
Jess Pronchick all contributed to the Jays' 50-28 advantage in bench points. Etown was also plus-16 in points off turnovers, 25-9.
The women's basketball team will head to Susquehanna on Saturday, January 27, at 4 p.m.
