Scagg's Block Party Powers Blue Jays Past Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team brought out the brooms, Tuesday evening at Swarthmore as they handed the Garnet their second loss of the season. 

The Blue Jays were strong at the net recording a season-high of 12 total team blocks. Katie Scaggs (5BS, 3BA) contributed eight of those blocks. Savannah Lesley recorded her first career double-double as she led the team with 10 kills while adding 10 digs. 

Set one against Swarthmore was tight as Elizabethtown started off with a 7-6 lead following a Gracie Britten kill. After the Garnet put up four straight points the Blue Jays rattled off six straight to extend their lead, 18-14. During Etown's run, Scaggs totaled three solo blocks and a block assist with Karlee Ray. Kills from Ray, Lesley, and Georgianna Kahley brought the Blue Jays within two of set point as they continued to lead. Scaggs smacked down the final kill to give the Jays' the 25-18 win. 

Set two started the same as Etown was out in front, 10-7 after kills from Kahley, Scaggs, and Lesley. Two kills from Ray gave the Blue Jays a five-point lead over the Garnet. On a 4-2 run, Britten, Scaggs, and Ray added kills. The two teams traded points for a while before Swarthmore tallied four in a row to come within one of Etown. Etown ended the set on a 3-2 run with Lesley putting down the final kill to win, 25-23. 

To start set three, Elizabethtown jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Two Garnet errors brought the score to 8-4, Etown. On a 7-1 run, Swarthmore took the lead at 11-9. The Blue Jays fought back taking the next four points as Britten, Lesley, and Ray added kills. The teams traded points before what would be an end to a thrilling set. Swarthmore tallied four in a row before Etown tallied three in a row. Elizabethtown came within one of match point as they led, 24-22 before the Garnet had other ideas. Etown would end up winning, 33-31 as they traded points till the end. 

Elizabethtown will return home this Friday, September 29 at 6PM as they face No.1 Juniata in their first Landmark Conference match of the season.
