LANCASTER, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team opened up the 2023 season with a 3-0 win over SUNY Geneseo on the first day of the Franklin & Marshall Invitational. First-year head coach,
EJ Smith earned his first career-win at the helm.
To start set one, SUNY Geneso jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Elizabethtown tied up the set at 9-9 following three straight kills from
Georgianna Kahley and
Kate Barbon. Etown ketp up their momentum from there leaping to a 19-9 lead after ten straight points. Three more Blue Jay kills put the team within two of taking the first set. A kill from
Katie Scaggs and a Knights error gave Etown the 25-12 win.
The second set started in a little bit of back and forth with Geneseo leading, 6-3. A 5-0 run gave Etown a 9-6 with a kill from
Lucy Stern and an ace from
Jena Minnick followed by Knights errors. SUNY Geneseo kept it tight as the Blue Jays just led by one at 14-13 following an ace from
Emma Bitner. Elizabethtown then dished out eight straight points to extend their lead to 22-14. The Knights rallied for four straight points but Barbon was able to close out the set, 25-21 with one final kill.
Set three saw the Blue Jays jump to a 15-3 lead over the Knights following ten points in a row. A kill from
Gracie Britten and a Geneseo error kept the Jays in the lead by ten. The Knights closed the gap with five straight points as Etown continued to lead, 22-16. The Blue Jays tallied the final four points of the set to win, 25-16.
