ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.-- The Elizabethtown College baseball team dropped its opening game of the NCAA Division Rocky Mount Regional, falling 11-3 to host N.C. Wesleyan, Friday evening.
The Blue Jays fall to 31-12 overall while the Battling Bishops improve to 36-8 on the season.
N.C Wesleyan opened the game wide open in their favor scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The Battling Bishops added two more runs in the third off a two-RBI single, extending their lead to 6-0. The Battling Bishops then tacked on another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth as they pulled away to a 9-0 lead over Etown.
Elizabethtown scored their first two runs of the game in the sixth.
Joey Thomas led off the inning with a single to right field, then advanced on a ground out. Thomas then advanced to third on an error by the second baseman and scored on an error by the pitcher.
Ben Watson reached first on the second baseman's error and then reached home on a ground out. The Blue Jays scored their final run of the game in the seventh as Wesleyan continued to lead, 9-3.
Eamon McCoubrey singled to left field and then advanced to second. Thomas hit a RBI singled to center field to score McCoubrey. The Battling Bishops scored their final run in the eighth to win, 11-3.
Watson went 2-5 with one run scored. McCoubrey went 1-1 with one run scored. Thomas went 2-2 with one run scored and a RBI.
Kyle Mulville picked up his first loss of the season as he moves to 8-1 on the mound after pitching 2.1 innings for the Blue Jays.
Etown will face Lebanon Valley tomorrow, May 20 at 11 AM.
