Strong Pitching Lifts Blue Jays over Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown baseball team used strong pitching from Nicholas Ortega and Greg Zerbe to win the first of two against Drew in the Landmark Conference series. The Blue Jays won 12-3 and 5-3. 

Etown moves to 16-6 overall and 8-0 in the Landmark Conference while Drew falls to, 11-14, 1-10 in the Landmark. 

GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 12, DREW 3

Drew started off the game with a homerun to left field to take a 1-0 lead followed by three strikeouts. Elizabethtown tied up the game in the bottom half of the inning as Ben Watson led off the inning with a triple up the middle. David Woolley then hit a sacrifice fly to score Watson. The Blue Jays added another run in the third. Quinten Perilli doubled to left center and then switched placed with Eamon McCoubrey as he doubled for a RBI. In the fifth, the Rangers tied up the game, 2-2 on a sacrifice fly to center field. 

Etown really got it going in the sixth scoring seven runs on five hits to take the lead at 9-2. Garrett Schartzbeck landed on first with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a Watson single to right center. After three straight hit by pitches, Schwartzbeck and Watson scored. Robbie Bertucio and Perilli were brought home on AJ Bednar's two-RBI single. After tacking on four more runs, the Blue Jays retired the Rangers pitcher. Tyler McGonigle doubled to left field to bring home two runs. 

In the eighth, James Vito, McGonigle, and Schwartzbeck scored to extend Etown's lead to, 12-2. Drew added their final run in the top of the ninth off a ground out into double play. 

Ortega picked up his fifth win of the season recording a career-high nine strikeouts. 

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 5, DREW 3

To start game two, Drew was on the board first before Elizabethtown put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Watson led off the inning with a single to left field, followed by Woolley's single up the middle. Bertucio reached on a fielder's choice which brought Watson across home plate. McCoubrey singled through the left side, scoring Bertucio. Bednar reached on a fielder's choice to score Perilli. Etown extended their lead to 4-1 after Perilli scored on a sacrifice fly. 

Chance Montgomery led off the bottom of the sixth with his second homerun of the season. Drew gave Etown a scare scoring two runs in the top of the eighth to cut the Blue Jays lead, 5-2. Drew then scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to left field. 

Zerbe picked up his fifth win of the season as he was just one strikeout shy of tying a career-high. Zach Silfies came in for relief, earning his fourth save of the season. 

The Blue Jays close out the series with Drew tomorrow starting at 12PM.
