Bertucio, Montgomery Homer as Baseball's Comeback Comes up Short against York (Pa.)

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College baseball team found itself down as many as six runs on Wednesday to York (Pa.), but the Blue Jays never stopped battling as they were able to get level late only to see the Spartans prevail in extra innings. Robbie Bertucio and Chance Montgomery each hit home runs in the game for the Etown.

York (Pa.) (5-7) led 4-0 after the top half of the first, though a David Woolley sac fly got the Blue Jays on the board at 4-1 in the bottom half of the inning. The Spartans would add three more in the second to go ahead 7-1.

Garrett Schwartzbeck drew a two out walk in the second and Tyler McGonigle made it two on with two out after being hit by a pitch. Bertucio needed one swing of the bat to halve the deficit as he sent his first homer of the season over the left field fence, a three-run shot, to make it 7-4 after two.

The Spartans remained in control, though, as they tacked on a run in the third and fourth innings, to take a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the fourth. Both sides settled in on the mound as neither team produced a run from the bottom of the fourth through the top of the seventh.

That's when Montgomery unleashed a moon shot to left, his first career home run for the Blue Jays, a solo jack to make it 9-5.

Etown kept at it in the eighth as Quinten Perilli doubled down the left field line to drive in Bertucio. Then, in a big spot with the bases loaded, AJ Bednar delivered with a three-run double into right field that tied the game 9-9.

The Jays had a chance in the ninth after Micah Wolf pitched a clean inning for Elizabethtown. Bertucio's ball dropped in along the right field line and Woolley made it consecutive singles to put two runners on. YCP was able to get out of it without allowing the game-winning run to cross and force extras.

After an RBI single put the Spartans ahead in the 10th, Aaron Hess singled deep in the hole at short to put one on with no outs. A ball in the dirt allowed pinch runner Riley Thomas to advance to second. Montgomery laid down the sac bunt to move Thomas to third, but York was able to get the final two outs of the inning to end the game and the Jays' comeback bid.

The baseball team will host St. John Fisher this weekend at Boyd Stadium for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
