ROANOKE, Va.-- The Elizabethtown baseball team got its season underway, Sunday at Roanoke. The Blue Jays fell, 4-6,
Game 1: Roanoke 6, Elizabethtown 4
Roanoke struck first in the bottom of the first on a ground out to shortstop. In the second, Etown took a 3-1 lead.
AJ Bednar tripled to center field for two RBI's, then a ground out to shortstop brought home, Bednar for the Blue Jays three runs. The third inning was scoreless.
Tyler McGonigle doubled to center field to bring in Bednar extending Elizabethtown's lead, 4-1 in the fourth.
The Maroons scored two run in the bottom of the fourth to come within one of Etown. The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless before Roanoke hit a double to left field to bring in three runs. The Maroons took the lead, 6-4.
Robbie Bertucio went 3-4 with one run scored. Bedner went 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
David Woolley recorded his first career hit and run as he went 1-3.
Zach Silfies came in as relief for
Kyle Mulville. Silfiess struckout four while Mulville struckout three.
Game 2: Roanoke 10, Elizabethtown 7
Game two saw the Blue Jays and Maroons tied in through the sixth until Roanoke had an explosive six run seventh inning to secure their win. Etown started the second inning with a walk and then Bednar stole second.
Joey Thomas doubled to left field, scoring Bednar. The third inning was scoreless before the Blue Jays scored their second run in the fourth.
Justin Wetzel singled to third and then advanced to second.
Ben Watson singled to left field to bring home Wetzel. Roanoke scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the sixth,
Quinten Perilli hit a two RBI triple to center field to extend Etown's lead, 4-1. The Maroons then tied up the game, 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Elizabethtown re-took the lead, 7-4.Wetzel scored on an error before Watson hit the Blue Jays first homerun of the season also brining in McGonigle. Roanoke really gained momentum tacking on six runs to lead, 10-7. The final two innings were scoreless.
Watson went 3-4 with two runs scored, three RBIs and a homerun. Wetzel went 2-5 with two runs scored.
Kyle Reader,
Greg Zerbe, and
Alex Perrin each made their debuts on the mound for the Blue Jays. Perrin was credited with the loss.
Elizabethtown will head to Fort Pierce, Fla for Spring Break next week. The Blue Jays will first face Monmouth in a doubleheader on March 5 at 10:30 AM.
