FORT PIERCE, Fla.-- The Elizabethtown baseball team got off to a hot start as they started their week long spring break trip in Florida. The Blue Jays shutout Monmouth (Ill.), 8-0 and 7-0 in a doubleheader.
Game 1 vs. Monmouth (Ill): W, 8-0
The first inning and a half was scoreless until Elizabethtown got on the board in the bottom of the second to lead, 3-0. With two Blue Jays on the bases,
Joey Thomas smacks a triple to right field for two RBI's.
Justin Wetzel singled then advanced one a throwing error to bring home, Thomas. Etown scored their fourth run in the fifth inning as a sacrifice fly brought in
Robbie Bertucio.
In the bottom of the sixth, Etown kept gaining momentum as they scored four more runs. Thomas singled to second base, stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball.
Tyler McGonigle singled to left center which brought Thomas across home plate. With the bases loaded, a hit by pitch scored the Blue Jays sixth run.
David Woolley then hit a two RBI single to bring Etown's lead, 8-0.
Thomas went 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Woolley went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Greg Zerbe gets the win on the mound and totaled three strikeouts.
Game 2 vs. Monmouth (Ill.): W, 7-0
Elizabethtown got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, a walk scored McGonigle and a hit by pitch scored
Ben Watson. To start the third, Watson singled up the middle, then stole second. Watson advanced to third on an error by the pitcher and then scored on a ground out to second. Wetzel doubled down the left field line to bring home,
Quinten Perilli.
The innings were scoreless until the sixth when the Blue Jays picked up two more runs. Watson tripled to right field for a RBI. Bertucio then singled to left center for an RBI. Elizabethtown scored their final run in the seventh inning. Perilli doubled to center field and advanced to third on a ground out.
Chance Montgomery singled to right field to bring home Perilli.
Watson went 3-4 with 3 runs and a RBI and a triple. Perilli went 3-3 with 2 runs and a RBI and a 2 doubles.
Kyle Mulville pitched 6 innings with 6 strikeouts.
Elizabethtown is back at it tomorrow at 1:00 PM for another doubleheader.. They will face Kenyon.
