SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The majority of Tuesday's neutral site matchup between the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team and 24th-ranked Loras was spent as a back-and-forth affair until the Duhawks extended their lead late, only to have the Blue Jays close the gap. Time ran out on Etown as Loras held on for a 83-78 win in the Puerto Rico Clasico.
Summer McNulty had a team-high 29 points for the Jays.
Cyleigh Wilson led off the game with a three, one of her team-high four in the game. The quarter was a one-possession game until the final minutes as Loras (7-2) was able to extend their lead to a six-point game.
Allyia Kennedy and
Jessica King hit shots late on as Elizabethtown (7-3) went into the second, 25-23.
Ella Gordon scored all eight of her points off the bench in the second as Etown and the Duhawks continued their back-and-forth. Gordon's three with under three minutes to go before the half had the Jays up by three. Loras scored the final four points of the second to take a one-point lead into halftime.
Like the first, Wilson drained another three to return the lead back to Elizabethtown. The senior, who has hit multiple threes in eight of her 10 games, drilled another trey a few minutes later.
McNulty tied the game with two of her 29 at 52-52. Loras finished out the third on a 6-0 run to take a 58-52 lead into the fourth.
The Blue Jays found themselves down by double-digits as the Duhawks were able to put a clamb on EC offensively in the fourth. Down 12 with 3:13 left, there was still plenty of fight left in Elizabethtown as they went on a quick 6-0 run behind
DaniRae Renno's four points and a bucket from
Jessica King to cut it to 74-68.
Etown sent Loras to the line with fouls at the end, but were able to maintain contact. McNulty was fouled on a driving layup where she made the shot and then also sank the free throw. Wilson canned a pair of foul shots down six to make it a four-point game.
McNulty hit a three with a few seconds left, but there just wasn't enough time left to overcome the deficit as Loras closed it out.
Elizabethtown will face Chatham tomorrow at 10am local time, 9am EST, in the final game of the Puerto Rico Clasico.
