BAYAMON, P.R. -- All junior guard
Summer McNulty needed was a point to become the 30th player in Elizabethtown College women's basketball history to record 1,000 career points. Her first make of the game put her over that mark, but it came in a close loss as the Blue Jays fell to Chatham, 78-74.
McNulty three-pointer was the first bucket of the game and Elizabethtown (7-4) led early on, though the Cougars would use a strong start to put the Jays on their heels after the opening 10 minutes of play. Chatham (10-2) led 25-13 going into the second, holding Etown to 4-for-14 from the floor in the first while shooting 10-for-15 offensively.
Makenna Mummert and McNulty got the Jays within eight, 25-17, in the opening minutes of the second. They were within four after a 10-2 run to begin the second.
DaniRae Renno and Mummert hit back-to-back shots with Mummert's coming off a
Cyleigh Wilson steal. The sophomore finished off the play at the other end to make it 27-23 with 5:31 left in the half.
The Cougars were able to keep it at a two-possession game, not allowing Etown to get closer than four points.
Ella Gordon hit a key three for the Jays with just under two minutes to go. Chatham took a 37-30 lead into halftime after a three-point play from Alyssa Laukus with 47 seconds to go.
Elizabethtown trailed by as many as 12 in the third quarter, but got as close as two with time running down after
Jessica King's layup with less than a minute in the third. King and McNulty combined for 19 of the team's 25 third-quarter points. Chatham used two quick baskets to close out the third and lead by six heading into the fourth.
Wilson knocked down her second trey of the game to tie the game at 63-63 in the fourth as the Blue Jays were able to whittle away the Cougars' lead to start the fourth, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the fourth.
Chatham quickly answered with a three of their own and led by as many as 10 with 4:04 remaining. Similar to the day before against Loras, Elizabethtown showed its will to fight back and got themselves back in the game late. Wilson hit another three, hit third of the game, to cut the deficit to just one with a little over a minute to go.
The Cougars were able to hit some free throws late as their defense forced two late turnovers to finish off the game.
McNulty led all scorers with 23 points. King recorded another double-double for Etown with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Mummert and Wilson each had nine points for the Jays.
McNulty reaches 1,000 career points in her 65th career game and 11th game this current season.
The women's basketball team will face nationally-ranked Scranton at Thompson on January 3 at 7 p.m.
