Key free throws down stretch help women's basketball take down East Texas Baptist

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore Ella Gordon stepped up when her team needed her to in Friday night's 58-55 win over East Texas Baptist. Gordon sank all six of her free throw attempts in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays took down the Tigers in the first game of the Captains Round Robin Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University.

A four-point game at the half, Elizabethtown (3-0) was able to stretch that to as many as nine points in the third quarter on the backs of a pair of threes from Cyleigh Wilson. Jessica King had two quick steals to begin the third and one of those resulted in Wilson's first trey of the game at the 9:08 mark of the third to put the Jays ahead by seven. Less than a minute later, DaniRae Renno found the senior on the left wing for another triple, which put the scoreline at a nine-point difference, 34-25, in favor of Etown.

East Texas Baptist battled back, led by Payton Hicks, who had a game-high 26 points. Hicks and the Tigers would use a 9-2 run over the next five minutes following Wilson's three to get back within a point. Hicks drained a three as time ran out in the third quarter to give ETBU the lead at 42-41 entering the fourth. That came after King found Makenna Mummert down low for the layup with nine seconds remaining to break a 39-39 tie.

It only took Elizabethtown a minute and a half into the fourth to regain the lead after Mummert returned the favor and fed King for the bucket in the paint to make it 45-43 early in the quarter.

The Tigers were stuck on 45 points for nearly four minutes as the Jays crept ahead by five after Wilson turned her steal into a Summer McNulty lay-in. Etown had a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers. That made it 50-45 with 2:47 to go.

Gordon was an injury substitution for EC with a little over two minutes to go, coming right off the bench and onto the free throw line for a pair. The sophomore calmly sank both attempts as the lead grew to seven. Gordon's free throw shooting would become vital as the Jays got ETBU into team foul trouble the final few minutes.

As the Tigers got it back down to three, Gordon again went to the charity stripe for two, and just like before, she knocked down both with 36 seconds remaining in the game. Then, after a quick three by Hicks, Gordon was fouled and back at the line where she took a two-point game and pushed it back to four, 56-52, with 32 seconds left.

Mummert and King each hit free throws late and while Hicks would hit another three, it was too little, too late for East Texas Baptist as Elizabethtown took the win.

McNulty led the Jays with 17 points while DaniRae Renno added 14. King finished with 11 rebounds, a game-high.

The Blue Jays will face third-ranked Christopher Newport on Sunday, November 19, at 2 p.m.
