Blue Jays Win Five-Set Thriller over Catholic on Senior Night

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team won in a five-set thrilling fashion, on their senior night against Catholic in Landmark Conference play. 

Before the match the Blue Jays recognized seniors; Georgianna Kahley, Katie Scaggs, and Kambrie Hepler

Emma Bitner recorded a double-double with a career-high 40 assists and 14 digs. Savannah Lesley also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Scaggs totaled 12 kills and seven total blocks (4BS, 3BA). Hepler tallied 26 digs while Kahley added 10 digs. 

From the start the matchup between Etown and Catholic was a thriller, as the Blue Jays won set one, 27-25. It was a tight race at the start with Elizabethtown holding a 10-8 lead. Lesley added a kill and an ace, while Kahley and Gracie Britten recorded a block on the run. Etown kept up their momentum tallying three straight points to extend their lead, 16-12. Another kill from Lesley and an ace from Hepler brought the Jays to 18-13. The Cardinals then went on a five point run, tying up the set 18-18. The Blue Jays recovered with three points in a row. Scaggs ended the set with a kill to win, 27-25. 

Catholic jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start set two. The two teams traded points for a while before the Cardinals had three straight attack errors bringing the score to 16-12, Catholic. The Cardinals continued to hold the lead as they rattled off three points in a row to come within one of set point. Karlee Ray smacked down the Blue Jays final kill before Catholic won, 25-20. 

Elizabethtown started out in front for set three with an 8-4 lead. Kills from Bitner, Ray, and Lesley brought Etown to a 13-7 lead. The Cardinals came within three before the Blue Jays went on an 8-1 run, jumping to a ten-point lead. Scaggs and Bitner along with Catholic errors brought the team within two of set-point. Lesley fired off the final two kills to win, 26-16. 

The Cardinals came out on set four seeking revenge as they jumped to a 7-1 lead. A kill from Kahley and a block by Bitner and Scaggs brought the Jays to 3-7. Catholic kept up their momentum going on a four-point run before rattling off five straight points to extend their lead to 21-8. Kills from Britten and Scaggs brought Etown within ten. A Scaggs kill and a Kahley ace were not enough as Catholic won set four, 25-14. 

Set five saw Elizabethtown go up, 5-0 early. Two blocks and a kill from Scaggs gave the Blue Jays the lead. Catholic added a point before Scaggs picked up two straight blocks, extending Etown's lead, 7-1. Coming off a timeout, the Cardinals racked up four straight points, coming within two of Etown. Two kills apiece from Lesley and Ray doubled Etown's lead, 12-6. After two straight points from both sides, Catholic didn't back down recording four points in a row. Kahley ended the match with a final kill to win, 15-12. 

Elizabethtown steps out of conference play next week as they first host Stevenson on Monday, October 16 at 7PM
