No. 23 Elizabethtown picks up big road win at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team held on to pick up a big road win at Catholic on Wednesday, 64-58. A big third quarter got the Blue Jays back in front and they were able to get out of the nation's capitol with the six-point victory. DaniRae Renno had her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Kaeli Romanowski finished two points shy of her first double-double, but set a new season-high in rebounds. Cyleigh Wilson was also in double figures for Etown with 12 points.

Elizabethtown held an early lead as Lindsay Boyd connected on the first shot of the game 10 seconds in. A little later, Cyleigh Wilson hit from three-point range to make it 5-1 for the Blue Jays with a minute and a half gone by in the first quarter. Catholic would finish the quarter on an 18-10 run to head into the second ahead by four, 19-15.

The second quarter would be a low scoring affair for both sides as both teams accounted for a total of 21 points. The Cardinals would outscore the Jays by a point, 11-10, and lead 30-25 at the half.

Summer McNulty assisted on the first two makes for Etown in the third quarter, both layups by DaniRae Renno, to get the Jays within a point. Jessica King would tie it after splitting a pair at the line and Wilson hit another three, her second of the game, that put Elizabethtown back in front, 33-30. Renno's layup on another McNulty assist, her third make and the sophomore guard's third dime to number 34 in the paint would cap a 10-0 run to start the quarter and force a timeout from the Cardinals.

The Blue Jays extended that run into a 16-0 spurt before Catholic would score, which took until the 3:50 mark of the third quarter and by then, Etown led 41-30. The Cardinals hit a mini-run of their own to get it back into single digits and forced a quick 30-second timeout from EC.

Etown continued to pound the paint as King and Taylor Huyck had late-quarter layups. Huyck's came with under a minute to go in the third to put the Blue Jays ahead by nine, 48-39. They would lead by seven after three, 48-41, making it a 12-point swing over the 10 minutes of action in the third. Elizabethtown won the quarter, 23-11.

Much like the third, it was a quick outburst in the fourth, 7-2 in favor of the Jays through a minute and a half to get the lead back into double digits, led by Renno and Romanowski accounting for those seven points. Renno's jumper from King made it 55-41 before Rachel Bussanich hit two foul shots.

The Cardinals weren't going away, getting within six as Catholic worked their way back from the foul line. Another pair from Bussanich cut the Jays' lead to six, 55-49. Six of CATHU's first eight points in the fourth were from the foul line.

Carly Mulvaney recorded seven straight points for Catholic and her jumper with under two to go in regulation made it a three-point game, 59-56.

Romanowski played a huge role for Elizabethtown down the stretch and in the final minute of play. First, she got a piece of Sarah White's jumper with the ball turning over to the Blue Jays as a result. She'd hit three freebies to help get the lead back up to six, 62-56. She would also collect her 10th rebound of the game, a new single-game high on the season.

The teams traded foul shots, first Bussanich knocked down two with 21 seconds left. Then, Lindsay Boyd sank a pair with 19 ticks left to make it a six-point affair once again, 64-58.

Erin Doherty missed a layup with 12 second left and Renno collected her final board of the night as Elizabethtown ran out the clock to claim the victory, their second straight win at Catholic.

Elizabethtown will host Goucher on Saturday, January 21, at 2 p.m.
