Women's basketball suffers first loss of season at No. 6 Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. -- In a battle of the final two unbeaten teams in the Landmark, No. 6 Scranton got the better of the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Friday night and handed the Blue Jays their first loss of the season. Summer McNulty had a team-high 23 points while Kaeli Romanowski had a season-high 12 off the bench in the loss.

Elizabethtown (13-1, 3-1 Landmark) had the lead twice in the first quarter. McNulty knocked down one of her four threes in the game on the first shot attempt. A little later, Cyleigh Wilson put the Jays back in front with a three of her own. Scranton (14-0, 3-0 Landmark) would go on a quick 5-0 spurt to jump back ahead. Romanowski's steal and layup at the other end cut it to 12-10 with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter.

The Royals led 22-16 after one.

DaniRae Renno's free throws early in the second kept it at a six-point game, but the Royals began to peel away as they got their lead up to 12 with seven and a half remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays continued to battle and worked to keep their deficit in single digits and the game within reach. McNulty hit a couple shots, including a three, as Etown tried to maintain arm's reach of Scranton.

The teams traded points over the final minute and a half of the second quarter. Romanowski, Lindsay Boyd, and Jessica King each had two points to make it an eight-point game, but the Royals answered each with baskets of their own to make it 10. Scranton led 44-34 at the half.

Elizabethtown struggled to get going in the third as Scranton built its lead up to 19 before King's basket broke a three and a half minute scoreless drought to start the quarter. The Jays scrapped and fought to get back into it, but the Royals were able to hold them off.

Scranton won the third quarter scoring battle 24-20 and then outscored Etown 19-13 in the fourth quarter.

McNulty led four Blue Jays in double figures with her 23 points. Romanowski added 12 off the bench while Renno and King each had 10 points and five rebounds.

Elizabethtown will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, January 18, to take on Catholic.
