HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had a nine-point lead at halftime that quickly grew to over 20 points after the Blue Jays held Juniata scoreless for most of the third quarter as they then cruised to a 78-51 win at Memorial Gymnasium.
Summer McNulty led the way with 20 points while 11 different players contributed in the scoring column for Etown.
A close and competitive first quarter between the teams saw No. 19 Elizabethtown (13-0, 3-0 Landmark) pull away late in the quarter. Juniata had led by five, but the Blue Jays were level after
Lindsay Boyd's three, steal, and assist to
Cyleigh Wilson on the fast break to make it 11-11.
McNulty dropped in a three later in the first that tied the game up once again, 15-15.
Kaeli Romanowski,
Taylor Huyck, and
Makenna Mummert would provide the final seven points of the quarter for Etown as they led 22-15 after one.
The ball rotation allowed Huyck to find Boyd wide open in the far corner and the sophomore sank her three-point attempt. Then, at the defensive end,
Cass Peris stepped into a passing lane to intercept the ball and went coast-to-coast for the layup as Elizabethtown quickly put its lead into double digits.
The Eagles hung around and were able to get back within five late in the second. Peris drove the left side of the lane with less than a minute and a half to go and went up strong with the left for another two.
Jessica King closed the half with a bucket on a baseline out of bounds play as Etown led by nine at the half.
The starting five pounded Juniata out of the intermission, going on a 16-0 run over the first 5:40 of the third quarter, not allowing a single point to the Eagles while pushing that lead to 25, 55-30, with 4:20 left in the third and a full timeout from JC after
Cyleigh Wilson knocked in a three.
Juniata finally broke their scoreless drought with 3:04 to go with their first bucket of the quarter. Elizabethtown would outscore the Eagles 18-9 in the third.
It was more of the same from the Blue Jays in the fourth as they outscored Juniata by nine once again, this time 21-12.
Ellie Fasick and
Allyia Kennedy added their names to the scoresheet with fourth-quarter points for Etown.
11 different players scored while seven players had at least three boards for the Jays.
Elizabethtown will play at nationally-ranked Scranton on Friday, January 13, at 6 p.m.
