Blue Jays Defeat Wilkes in Season Home Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- Three different Elizabethtown College field hockey players added a goal in the 3-1 win over Wilkes, Wednesday. The Blue Jays scoring play in the final five minutes of the game secured the win in the season home opener at Wolf Field. 

Elizabethtown (2-1) just edge Wilkes (1-2) in penalty corners, 9-7 while Wilkes got the edge in shots, 11-9. 

The Blue Jays held possession for the majority of the first quarter taking seven penalty corners to start but they were unable to capitalize on getting to the back of the net. While Etown held the majority of possession, Wilkes was first to take a shot seven minutes into the game. The Blue Jays took their first shot of the game minutes later but it was saved by Wilkes goalkeeper, Carly Eidle. 

In the second, following a shot by Grace Hardy, Hardy was able to find the back the net for Etown to score the first goal of the game. With Elizabethtown leading 2-0 at the end of the half, the third quarter became more interesting as Wilkes put up their lone goal of the game. 

Eight minutes into the third quarter on a wide open run down the side, Drew Bridges slid past the Wilkes goalkeeper for her first career goal. About seven minutes later, the Colonels held the ball and after a rebounded shot, Wilkes was on the board. 

To start the final quarter, Wilkes held the ball on their end of the field as they took two corners and one shot. Minutes later, Etown took over following a corner, the Blue Jays were able to capitalize on one final goal. With five minutes remaining, Grace Hussey assisted Chloe Smith for the Blue Jays third goal. 

Elizabethtown will travel to McDaniel on Saturday, September 10th for a 1:00 PM start.
