Women's volleyball moves to 3-0 with sweep at Penn State Berks

READING, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team moved its record to 3-0 after sweeping Penn State Berks Tuesday evening in non-conference action. Etown won 25-13, 25-21, 25-21 for its first sweep of the season, led by Gianna Krinock's seven kills. Five different players had at least five kills for the Jays.

The first set remained within a point or two either way through the first 15 points as Elizabethtown (3-0) held onto a one-point lead, 8-7. Slowly, the Blue Jays slipped away from Penn State Berks (2-2) to take control of the opening set. Bryanna Miller and Gracie Britten shut the door on the Lions with a combined block to end it and give Etown a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, things went very similarly to the first, as it was a one-point match in favor of the Jays through 15 points. After a 13-13 tie, Elizabethtown outscored PSB 12-8 the remainder of the set to go ahead 2-0 in the match. Katie Scaggs, Miller, and Kambrie Hepler each registered a kill off Emma Bitner's assist to help break the 13-all tie. Then, points from Miller, Britten, and a service ace by Jena Minnick led to a Berks timeout.

The Lions managed to get within 23-21, but Krinock's kill and Bitner's ace ended the second set for the Blue Jays.

The Lions clung to life early in the third set, but the closest they got was 4-2 to Etown. The Jays had their sights set on the sweep and that's what they got.

Britten's ace gave Elizabethtown its largest lead in the set at seven points, 18-11. Credit Berks for not giving up on the match as they battled back to within three twice, but Etown was too much and it was too late for the Lions. Savannah Lesley finished off the night with a kill to wrap up the 3-0 win for EC.

Krinock had a team-high seven kills in the match while Scaggs was one behind with six. Miller, Britten, and Georgianna Kahley each had five apiece for the Jays. Bitner provided 15 assists on the night while Britten had a combined five blocks. Hepler dug a team-high nine balls for Etown.

Elizabethtown will compete at the Eastern Invitational this coming weekend, first with a matchup against McDaniel on Friday, September 9, at 5 p.m.
