HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College women's volleyball team opened the 2022 season with two win, topping Stockton and Haverford Friday evening.
The Blue Jays came from behind in both matches, taking down Stockton, 3-1, before earning a 3-2 victory of the Fords. It is the first time since 2015 that Etown has won the first two matches of its schedule. The Fords sit at 1-1 after day one while the Ospreys sit at 0-1.
In the Haverford match, senior
Bryanna Miller notched a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs. Junior
Katie Scaggs hit .500 with 10 kills and six block assists while classmate
Kambrie Hepler tallied a match-high 26 digs. Sophomore
Emma Bitner registered a team-high 27 assists. Stats for the Stockton match are not yet available.
After falling behind 2-1 against Haverford, the Blue Jays came storming back in the fourth set to force a final frame. Trailing 5-4, Etown used a 10-0 run capped off three consecutive aces from Miller, giving Elizabethtown the 14-5 lead. Haverford never could find its footing in the fourth as sophomore
Gracie Britten found Miller for the final kill of the set, wrapping up the 25-13 win.
In the fifth and final set, the Blue Jays ran out to an 8-3 lead after freshman
Kara Davies hammered home a kill. The Fords battled back to tie the match at eight before Etown scored four of the next five points for the 12-9 lead after a block by Davies and Scaggs. Haverford moved with in one (12-11) before the Blue Jays rattled off the final three points of the fifth capped off by a block by junior
Georgianna Kahley and Scaggs to complete the comeback, 15-11.
Elizabethtown is back in action on Tuesday, September 6 at Penn State Berks. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
