SCRANTON, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team matched a season-high in runs and hits, topping Catholic, 18-8, on day one of the Landmark Conference Championship.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 20-20 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 28-11.
Junior
Ben Watson finished the game 5-5 with three doubles, four RBI, and two runs scored. Senior
James Vito tallied two doubles of his own, going 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Eamon McCoubrey added two more RBI and senior Tyle McGonigle, graduate student
Andrew Fisher, senior
Robbie Bertucio, and sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck each had an RBI of their own.
Senior Matt Tesoriero paced the Catholic offense, finishing the game with a double, a triple, and two RBI.
Trailing 3-2 heading to the fourth, the Etown scrounged together five runs to move ahead 7-3. McGonigle started the charge, working a bases loaded walk to plate Vito and knot the score at three. Schwartzbeck then took advantage of a wild pitch to put the Blue Jays up 4-3 before Watson singled to the shortstop, scoring sophomore
AJ Bednar for Etown's fifth run. The Blue Jays would tack on two more runs to complete the five run swing going into the bottom of the fourth.
Elizabethtown tacked on four more runs before blowing the game wide open in the top of the eighth, scoring seven runs to seal the game. McCoubrey highlighted the outburst, hitting a pinch-hit single down the left field line to score two runs. Fisher, Bertucio, Vito, and Schwartzbeck each added an RBI in the inning giving the Blue Jays the 18-5 lead.
Catholic would squeak out three more runs but it would not be enough as Etown took game one of the weekend tournament, 18-8.
Graduate Student
Tyler Dunbar (5-6) secured his third postseason victory of his career, allowing five eared runs over seven innings and struck out six. Senior
Nathaniel Barnes added two strikeouts in an inning of relief before junior
Micah Wolf closed out the game with a perfect ninth.
Junior Tucker Alch (9-2) lasted four innings in the losing effort, allowing four earned runs on eights and struck out eight.
Elizabethtown remains in the winners bracket tomorrow, facing Susquehanna at 2:30 p.m. The Blue Jays will be the home team as the higher seed.
