SCRANTON, Pa. - Junior
Ben Watson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the Elizabethtown College baseball team complete the 7-5 comeback against Susquehanna and move the team one win away from a Landmark Conference Championship.
With the win, the Blue Jays move to 21-20 on the season, while the River Hawks fall to 16-24.
Watson finished the game 1-4 with the home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. It is the juniors eighth home run of the season and 10th of his career. Sophomores
Garrett Schwartzbeck and
AJ Bednar each registered two RBI for Etown.
Susquehanna's offense was paced by sophomore Kris Morrow, going 4-5 with two doubles, a run scored, and two RBI.
Trailing 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Jays began to rally. With two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck laced a single to left field, scoring senior
Tyler McGonigle and Watson to knot the score at two. Not to be outdone by his classmate, Bednar followed up Schwartzbeck with a single to left-center field, plating senior
James Vito and Schwartzbeck to give Etown the 4-2 advantage.
Watson would put his stamp on the game in the next inning, stepping in with one out and runners on first and second and hammering a home run over the left-center field fence to push the Blue Jays advantage to 7-2 after six.
Susquehanna did not quit, scoring a run in the top of the seventh and two more in the top of the ninth with the go ahead run at the plate, but junior
Zach Silfies managed a fly ball to left field for the final and keeping Etown undefeated on the weekend with the 7-5 victory.
Freshman
Kyle Mulville took the no-decision, allowing two runs on fours hits and striking out one in 3.1 innings of work. Senior
Eric Sipling (5-1) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits and struck out three over 3.2 innings. Silfies finished off the game, allowing two earned runs on two hits and struck out two.
Sophomore Teagan Duffie (3-6) allowed four runs on two hits and struck out four in the losing effort.
Elizabethtown is back in action tomorrow against the winner of Susquehanna vs. Catholic. Opening pitch is set for 11 a.m. The Blue Jays are the only remaining undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament.
