HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team dropped two games to Juniata, falling in game one 6-4 before falling in game two 6-4, Saturday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 14-14 overall and 7-4 in league play, while the Eagles improve to 8-14 overall and 3-7 in the Landmark.
GAME ONE: JUNIATA 7 ELIZABETHTOWN 4
Juniata road a five run second inning to the 7-4 victory over Elizabethtown to take game one of the doubleheader.
Junior
Ben Watson carried the Blue Jays' offense, going 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Seniors
Robbie Bertucio and
Joey Thomas and sophomore
AJ Bednar each finished with a double.
Junior Dakota Snyder paced the Eagles with three RBI.
Etown got on the board first in the top of the second inning with Watson and senior
James Vito reaching to start the innings. After a sacrifice bunt from senior
Tyler McGonigle put the runners at second and third, Bednar knocked a single through the left side to plate Watson. Then, a throwing error by the catcher on a stolen base attempt by Bednar score Vito and gave Etown the 2-0 lead with one out and a runner at third. A couple batters later, Thomas stepped in and knocked a double down the right field line, bring Bednar around to score to give the Blue Jays the 3-0 advantage midway through the second.
After Juniata responded with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a two run lead (5-3), Etown closed the gap to one in the top of the third.With one out and Bertucio on second, Watson drove a single to left field, scoring Bertucio and making the score 5-4 in the third.
With the Eagles holding a 6-4 lead in the ninth, the Blue Jays attempted to mount a comeback. Etown put its first two batters on first and second to lead off the innings but were unable to bring either run across, dropping game one 6-4.
Graduate student
Tyler Dunbar (3-5) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and struck out six.
Junior Chase Allesandroni (3-2) earned the win for Juniata, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out five.
GAME TWO: JUNIATAÂ 7 ELIZABETHTOWN 4
Juniata used two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth to propel themselves to the 7-4 win in game two over Elizabethtown.
Watson followed up his game one performance, going 2-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Bertucio finished 2-5 with a run scored and Bednar had the Blue Jays other extra base hit with a double.
Graduate student Issac Maclay led the Eagles' offense with two doubles and three RBI.Â
Trailing 3-1 going into the sixth inning, Etown tied the game with one swing of the bat as Watson blasted two-run home run over the right field fence, plating Bertucio and tying the game at three.
Juniata responded, scoring four unanswered runs giving them a 7-3 lead heading to the ninth. The Blue Jays again rallied in the top of the inning, as graduate student
Andrew Fisher stepped in with runners at first and second and two outs, knocking a single to left field to score McGonigle and make the score 7-4. Sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck would then walk to load the bases, bringing Bertucio to the plate with the bases loaded. Etown, however, would not be able to connect yet again, failing to bring a run across and falling in game two 7-4.
Freshman
Kyle Mulville (4-3) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and struck out two for the loss.
Junior Drew Westover (1-4) earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three over five innings.
Elizabethtown completed the weekend series at Juniata tomorrow, April 10. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
