Blue Jays Avoid Sweep With Offensive Outburst Against Eagles

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team erupted for a season-high 18 runs and 18 hits in the Blue Jays' 18-8 victory over Juniata in Landmark Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, Etown improves to 15-14 overall and 8-4 in league play, while the Eagles fall to 8-15 on the season and 3-8 in the Landmark.

Junior Ben Watson continued his strong weekend, going 3-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Watson finishes the weekend 8-12 with two home runs, seven RBI, and five runs scored. Sophomore AJ Bednar hit his first career home run and tallied a career-high six RBI and a two runs scored. Sophomore Garrett Schwartzbeck finished 3-5 with three RBI and graduate student Andrew Fisher went 2-3 with two RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. 

Graduate student Jake Swank paced the Juniata offense, coming a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 5-5 with three doubles, a triple, and four RBI. 

Holding a 8-4 lead going into the sixth, the Blue Jays erupted for five runs on six hits in the top half of the inning. Fisher started the run, knocking a single to right field to plate Thomas and make the score 9-4. After Fisher stole second to move into scoring position, Watson matched him with a single to right field to push the lead to 10-4. After an error by the third basemen plated two more runs, Schwartzbeck completed the inning with an RBI-single through the left side, plating Bednar to make the score 13-4 midway through the sixth.

Etown would add for five more runs the rest of the way for its largest win of the season, topping Juniata 18-8. 

Graduate Student Joseph Sarich improved to 1-1 on the season, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out five over 4.1 innings. Senior Nathaniel Barnes, senior Matt Barton, junior Micah Wolf, and senior Eamon McCoubrey then combined to finish off the win, allowing four earned runs on five hits and striking out two. 

Sophomore Zachary Malone (2-3) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and struck out three. 

Elizabethtown is back in action on Tuesday, April 12 against #17 Arcadia. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
