HARRISBURG, Pa. - Senior
Tyler McGonigle hit his second career home run, leading the Elizabethtown College baseball team to the 6-4 comeback win against Penn State Harrisburg Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve their record to 14-12 and improve its winning streak to eight games. The Nittany Lions fall to 10-14 overall.
McGonigle finished the game 1-4 with his home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Freshman
RJ Agriss went 2-3 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore
AJ Bednar registered a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Senior Chase Smith paced the Harrisburg offense, going 2-5 with an RBI.
Trailing 4-0 heading to the top of the sixth, the Blue Jays began to rally. With graduate student
Andrew Fisher on first and two outs, McGonigle stepped in and sent his first home run of the season over the left field fence to make the score 4-2.
Etown tied the game in the next with two more runs. With Bednar on first, Agriss knocked a double down the right fielld line, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Senior
Joey Thomas then took advantage of the scoring opportunity, sending a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Bednar. Pinch hitting, senior
James Vito tied the game, hammering a double to center field to score Agriss.
The Blue Jays competed the comeback in the top of the eighth as Bednar laced a double to left field with runners on first and second, plating Bertucio to make the score 5-4. A few batters later sophomore
Bryce Keller pinch hit for Thomas and added an insurance run for Etown, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, plating McGonigle.
The Nittany Lions would load the bases in the ninth inning with no outs, but senior
Eric Sipling shut the door on any comeback, striking out the next two batters and inducing a groundout to second to lock up the 6-4 victory.
Sipling (3-1) earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out five over three innings of work. The senior has a 2-0 record with a save over his last three appearances.
Senior Brad Richards (0-2) takes the loss for the Nittany Lions, allowing one earned run over three innings and striking out one.
Elizabethtown remains on the road for its next Landmark Conference series against Juniata on Saturday, April 9. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
