ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team split with Moravian on senior day taking game one, 9-3, before falling in game two, 9-5, to earn a Landmark Conference playoff berth Saturday afternoon.
With the split, the Blue Jays sit at 19-19 overall and 11-6 in league play, while the Greyhounds move to 21-17 on the season and 7-9 in the Landmark.
GAME ONE: ELIZABETHTOWN 9 MORAVIAN 3
Etown ran out to a 4-0 lead after four on its way to the 9-3 victory against Moravian to clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs.
Senior
Robbie Bertucio finished game one 3-4 with two RBI. Graduate student
Andrew Fisher went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs. Junior
Ben Watson finished 2-5 with a double and a run scored.
Sophomore Matt Madigan led the Greyhounds, going 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the board in the bottom of the second. With Watson and Fisher on second and third, Bertucio laced a single to center field, plating Fisher and giving Etown the 1-0 lead. Watson then took advantage of a throwing error by the catcher to score and make the score 2-0 after one.
The Blue Jays pushed its advantage to 5-0 in the fourth starting with an RBI single from freshman
RJ Agriss. Senior
Joey Thomas followed up the freshman with a sacrifice fly to center, plating senior
James Vito and making the score 4-0. Agriss completed the scoring, coming in from third after a wild pitch to give Etown a five run cushion.
Holding a 6-2 advantage in the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Jays brought three more runs home to put the game out of reach. With runners on second and third, Fisher stepped in and knocked a single to right center field, scoring Thomas and junior
Justin Wetzel. Bertucio then completed the three run innings for Etown, sending a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Fisher and making the score 9-3.
Junior
Zach Silfies slammed the door in the ninth, putting Moravian down in order to give the Blue Jays the 9-3 win.
Graduate student
Tyler Dunbar (4-6) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits and struckout six over 6.2 innings of work. Senior
Eric Sipling and Silfies combined allow just one run in 2.1 innings of relief.
Senior Eddie Olsen (3-3) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and struck out four in the losing effort.
GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 5 MORAVIAN 9
Moravian bounced back in game two for the 9-5 victory over Etown to wrap up the afternoon.
Senior
Eamon McCoubrey finished game two going 3-5 with a team-high three RBI. Bertucio continued his strong afternoon, going 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Bertucio extends his hitting streak to 26 games.
Madigan led the Greyhounds offense again in game two, tallying a double and three RBI.
Tied at three going into the bottom of the fourth, Etown moved back in front. After an double by Bertucio, the senior slid over to third after sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck flew out right field. McCoubrey then stepped in and line a single to center field, bring Bertucio around to score and giving the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead.
The Greyhounds, however, stole the momentum back, outscoring Etown 6-1 the rest of the way, forcing a rubber match on Sunday with the 9-5 win.
Freshman
Kyle Mulville started for Etown, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and striking out one. Senior
Matt Barton (2-3) took the loss in relief, allowing four earned runs on four hits and striking out one over two innings of work.
Junior Tyler Valentine (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out two.
Elizabethtown returns to action tomorrow, May 1 for the final game of the series against Moravian. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
