Baseball Tops Diplomats in Midweek Tilt

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team scored three runs in the first inning on its way to the 4-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 9-12 on the season, while the Diplomats fall to 9-9 overall.

Sophomore Garrett Schwartzbeck finished the game 1-4 with two runs scored. Seniors Robbie Bertucio, James Vito, and Tyler McGonigle each tallied an RBI.

Neither team registered an extra base-hit in the game.

Etown wasted little time getting on the board, as senior Andrew Fisher walked and then Schwartzbeck reached first after being hit by a pitch. The two baserunners then stole the next respective base to be on second and third with no out. Fisher then came home to score after a wild pitch, advancing Schwartzbeck to third. After a walk by Bertucio, Vito singled through the left side, plating Schwartzbeck to make the score 2-0. McGonigle completed the scoring later in the inning, grounding out to second, scoring Bertucio from third and making the score 3-0 after one.

The Blue Jays would tack on one more run in the fifth to earn its first shutout of the season, 4-0.

Junior Ben Watson started for Etown, going three innings and scattering two hits and striking out four. Senior Matt Barton pitched a perfect fourth inning, followed by five strong innings from Joseph Sarich (1-1) to earn his first of the season.

Sophomore Jason Schulman (1-1) takes the loss for F&M, allowing three earned runs on one hit and striking out two.

Elizabethtown is back in action tomorrow, March 30 at Alvernia. Opening pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
