BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team fell to #8 Southern Virginia in straight sets in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Friday night.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 11-9 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the Knights improve to 15-2 on the season and 5-0 in the CVC.
Junior
Steve Swain paced Etown, hitting .304 with a team-high 11 kills. Classmate
Tony Camillo finished the night hitting .636 with seven kills. Sophomore
Nate Seeger tallied 29 assists and junior
Cameron Krebs recorded eight digs.
Senior Nahuel Recabarren led Southern Virginia with nine kills, five digs, and .421 hitting percentage.
Trailing 8-4 in the opening set, the Blue Jays bounced back with two kills from junior
Blake Hildebrand and a kill from Seeger to make the score 8-7. Etown continued to battle and closed within two late at 21-19, but that is as close as they would get as the Knights rattled of four of the final six points to take the opening set 25-21.
Southern Virginia hit .409 in the second set to score the 25-13 win in the second set and move ahead 2-0 going into the third set. Midway through the third frame, the Blue Jays trailed 16-14 before back-to-back kills from Swain and Camillo knotted the score at 16. Southern Virginia would move ahead by two yet again with consecutive points, but Etown would close within one at 18-17, 19-18, 20-19, and finally 21-20 to remain within striking distance. The Knights, however, completed the sweep, scoring four of the final five points to take the final set, 25-21.
Elizabethtown finishes its CVC road swing on Saturday, March 19 at Eastern Mennonite. Opening serve is set for 2 p.m.
