Widener pounces on women's lacrosse

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After a 2-2 tie in the first quarter, Widener was able to get away from the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team and go on to beat the Blue Jays, 15-5, on Tuesday at Wolf Field. Kate Ziegler and Hannah Cressman each had four points for Etown.

Cressman assisted on both of Ziegler's first-quarter goals. Each goal came in response to a Widener (3-0) goal within about a minute's time, though the Pride got the final goal of the first and led 3-2 after one.

Widener's defense shut out the Blue Jays in the second while Clark Trowbridge scored early in the quarter and Katie Ward late to send the Pride up 5-2 into the halftime break.

Down 6-2, Kendall Ulmer and Cressman tallied back-to-back goals for Elizabethtown (1-2) to get the Jay within 6-4 with 10 minutes left in the third.

Widener would get the next five goals to finish out the third and grow their lead to 11-4 heading into the fourth.

The Pride scored another four as they had put up nine unanswered before Ziegler fed Cressman for her second goal of the game with 2:52 remaining in regulation.

Anna Charitonchick had a team-high seven ground balls and Ziegler recorded four caused turnovers for Etown.

The women's lacrosse team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they host Albright at 12 p.m. on Wolf Field.
