HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Veronica Christ had 24 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team and was one of four players in double figures for the Blue Jays in an 80-63 win at Juniata Wednesday evening. Christ was a career-best 9-for-9 at the foul line and Etown shot 25-for-30 as a team, their best mark since 2019.
Elizabethtown (18-3, 10-1 Landmark) was down by six in the first quarter, but Christ and
Summer McNulty helped pull the Jays back into it. They combined for seven straight points for Etown, and after trailing 8-2, they were down just a point after Christ's three-pointer with 3:47 to go in the first. She hit three triples in the game.
Christ knocked down a pair at the foul line a little later to give EC the lead and
Cyleigh Wilson tacked onto that lead with a three of her own to make it 14-10 with 2:04 left.
Emily Prowell ended the first with one of Elizabethtown's seven treys in the game. The sophomore knocked down the long range shot with nine seconds on the clock. Etown led 19-14 going into the second.
Cassandra Peris came off the bench for 10 points for the third consecutive game. She made both her foul shots to start the second. Prowell then grabbed a defensive rebound and in transition, Christ found
Taylor Huyck for two of her 11 off the bench. The Blue Jays finished with 27 points off the bench.
McNulty's three-point play a little over three minutes into the second grew the lead to double digits at 11. Wilson knocked down her second three of the game and Christ made good on a pair at the charity stripe as the Blue Jays pulled away from the Juniata (5-16, 1-10 Landmark). They had held the Eagles scoreless for nearly five minutes of game action while they built up the 16-point lead.
A quick spurt, though, from Juniata got them as close as eight near the end of the second quarter.
Clare Marchese made two at the line for Etown with 24 seconds left as the Jays led by 11. Haily Sherman knocked down two with just 10 seconds before the half. She had a team-high 24 points for the Eagles. Elizabethtown led 38-29 at halftime.
The Jays put their stamp on the game in the third quarter, outscoring Juniata 23-14 to grow the lead to 18 by the start of the fourth quarter. Sherman did have JC as close as five with 6:11 remaining in the third, but from there it was all Etown. Christ's three near the end of the third pushed the lead to 21, but Grace Long countered with a three for Juniata on the next possession. Elizabethtown held the Eagles to 4-for-21 (19 percent) from three-point range.
Grace Nazih got the Blue Jays to the 80-point mark for the second game in a row and fourth time this season with her layup late in the fourth. Elizabethtown, who has the fifth-best team three-point shooting percentage in Division III, went 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc Wednesday night.
McNulty and Huyck each had 11 for Etown while Peris dropped in 10. McNulty added seven assists.
Jessica King had a team-high nine rebounds and Prowell grabbed seven. The free throw shooting (25-for-30)Â was the most Elizabethtown has made since December 18, 2019 against Roanoke in Puerto Rico.
The women's basketball team will host nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, February 12, at 4 p.m.
