DEMOREST, Ga. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team wrapped up the Georgia portion of its spring break trip with two losses to Piedmont, falling 11-1 in game one and 8-7 in game two Monday afternoon.
With the two losses the Blue Jays fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Lions improve to 7-3-1.
GAME ONE: PIEDMONT 11 ELIZABETHTOWN 1
Piedmont dominated from the jump of game one, scoring 11 straight runs to take the 11-1 victory.
Sophomore
Bryce Keller and graduate student
Andrew Fisher each finished with two hits for Etown. Junior
Chris McGill tallied the Blue Jays' lone RBI, while senior
Tyler McGonigle tallied a run score.Â
Freshman Kyle Carlson paced Piedmont, going 4-4 with three doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored.
After scoring a run in the third inning, the Lions created some breathing room in the fourth, scoring three more run for the 4-0 lead at the end of four. Piedmont would go on to score 11 unanswered runs before a groundout to second base by McGill plated McGonigle from third, making the final score 11-1.
Junior
Nicholas Ortega (0-2) allowed five runs and eight hits over 4.1 innings, striking out six. Sophomore
Justin Peterson finished the game in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on six hits and striking out three.Â
Freshman Braden Simms (2-0) earned the win for Piedmont, allowing no earned runs and scattering six hits while striking out five.Â
GAME TWO: PIEDMONT 8 ELIZABETHTOWN 7
It was a battle to the end, as the Blue Jays had the go ahead run at second in the ninth but couldn't complete the rally, falling in the rubber game, 8-7.
Freshman
RJ Agriss finished the game 3-6 with an RBI and a run scored. McGonigle registered a double and a run scored and senior
James Vito finished with a team-high two RBI and two hits. Fisher and freshman
Robbie Bertucio each registered two hits as well.
Carlson followed up his game one performance with a double, a homerun, two rbi, and two runs scored.
Etown wasted little time getting on the with the three runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Bertucio steps in and hits an RBI single, plating Fisher. After a walk by senior
Joey Thomas scored Keller, Vito completed the early run, grounding out to second but plating senior
Lucas Carr in the process.
Piedmont answered, plating seven unanswered runs over the next four innings, include four in the first, to move ahead 7-3.
The Blue Jays responded with three runs between the fifth and sixth, capped off by an RBI single from Carr, bringing freshman
RJ Agriss around to score.Â
The Lions tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh to push its advantage back to two at 8-6. Etown attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, as both McGonigle and Fisher reached to start the inning. Agriss then made good on the start, hitting a single that bough McGoningle around to score and made it a one run game.Â
Piedmont, however managed to get out of the jam, putting down the final three Blue Jays down in order to escape with the 8-7 victory and the series win.
Senior
Matt Barton (0-1) went 2.1 innings for Etown in his first start of the season, allowing five earned runs on five hits and striking out two. Graduate student
Joseph Sarich and senior
Eric Sipling combined to allow two earned runs on three hits and struck out over the final 5.2 innings.
Junior Kyle York (1-0) earned the win in relief for Piedmont, allowing one run and scattering four hits over three innings of work. Senior Carter Ballstadt registered his team leading third save of the season, striking out six over the final two innings.
Elizabethtown returns to action on Wednesday, March 2 for one against Houghton in Fort Pierce, Fla. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
