FORT PIERCE, Fla. - The Elizabethtown College baseball team banged out 14 hits and 11 runs on its way to the 11-1 win against Houghton in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 1-2 overall.
Graduate student
Andrew Fisher went 4-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Senior
Robbie Bertucio finished 3-5 with a game-high three RBI and freshman
RJ Agriss registered two RBI. Senior
Tyler McGonigle and sophomore
Garrett Schwartzbeck each tallied two runs scored.
Leading 2-1, Etown opened things up in the bottom of the six with four runs. With one out and a runner at third, senior
James Vito slashed a single through the left side, plating junior
Chris McGill to put the Blue Jays up 3-1.Â
A few batters later, Fisher stepped in with the bases loaded and hammered a double to left-center field, scoring McGonigle and Vito, and making the score 5-1. Agriss completed the offensive burst, knocking a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Schwartzbeck around to score and increasing the Blue Jays advantage to 6-1 after six.
Etown sealed the game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, staring with an RBI by senior
Joey Thomas after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Senior
Nathaniel Barnes kept the inning going, beating out a double play to score Fisher followed by another run by Agriss after a throwing error from Houghton, making the score 9-1. Bertucio completed the scoring and locked up the win two batters later, hitting a two run double to right field, plating sophomore
AJ Bednar and Barnes, and making the final score 11-1 in favor of the Blue Jays,
Freshman
Kyle Mulville (1-0) earned his first career win, allowing one earned run and scattering four hits over six innings and striking out two. Junior
Micah Wolf came on to pitch 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Senior
Eamon McCoubrey wrapped up the victory, recording the final out in his first appearance as a pitcher for Etown.
Sophomore Ethan Cetton (0-1) took the loss for Houghton, allowing four earned runs over 5.1 innings and striking out four.
Elizabethtown is back to action tomorrow, March 3 for a doubleheader against Maritime. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
