Phillips leads way as softball splits, first career win for Coach Slattery

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Paige Phillips tied her career high in strikeouts and had a career-best four hits in the second game of the day for the Elizabethtown College softball team as the Blue Jays split their opening two games at Legends Way Ballfields. Etown fell 7-1 to Concordia (Minn.) before beating Neumann 8-4. The win was the first of head coach Bekah Slattery's career.

Game 1: Concordia (Minn.) 7, Elizabethtown 1
Down 2-0 in the third, Kadyn Crisswell drilled a double to the left field to bring home Cassidy Dodds, who was in to pinch run. It was Crisswell's first career hit and RBI for Elizabethtown (1-1).

Concordia (2-1) tacked on a run in the fifth to go up 3-1. The Blue Jays had a chance to get a run back in the bottom half after Amelia Lark singled through the left side and moved Grace Hussey to second. WIth a runner in scoring position, starting pitcher Megan Gavin fanned the batter for the final out of the inning.

The Cobbers made it 4-1 in the sixth and Gavin struck out the side to avoid any damage as Etown had another runner in scoring position.

A three-spot in the seventh for Concordia made it 7-1 and that's how it ended as the Jays couldn't add on to their run total.

Hussey, Lark, and Kaitlyn Witmer each had two hits apiece.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 8, Neumann 4
Phillips was the game two starter for the Blue Jays, and right off the bat, she helped her own cause. The senior laced a two-run double to left center to score Kristen Aydelotte and Emily Polimeni. Dodds followed up with her first of three hits in the game, a one-run double to right field to score Phillips. Crisswell, who was at third after Dodds' two-bagger, scored on a wild pitch and Elizabethtown 4-0 after the top half of the first inning.

Phillips kept Neumann (0-2) scoreless through three innings as Etown built a 6-0 lead for their starter. Dodds scored on an error in the third and Olivia Prosser drove in her first career RBI with a base hit to score Jenna Davis to make it a two-run third inning for EC.

The Knights got four of those runs back in the fourth to make it a 6-4 game going into the fifth.

It stayed a two-run game into the top of the sixth when Elizabethtown tacked on two more. Jenna Davis and Ashley Judd recorded their first career hits and RBIs as Etown went ahead 8-4.

Phillips finished off her complete game effort in the seventh with her sixth strikeout of the game to end it. At the plate, Phillips went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Polimeni and Dodds each had three hits. Davis drew two walks and had a stolen base along with Judd.

The softball team is back at it tomorrow with games against Chatham (4:15pm) and Finlandia (6:30pm).
