CLERMONT, Fla. -- Harley Rife earned her first career win and
Paige Phillips moved to 2-0 on the season as each got a win Monday for the Elizabethtown College softball team. Phillips came on in relief against Chatham and the Blue Jays came back to beat Chatham in the first game before Rife handled Finlandia in a game two victory for Etown.
Game 1: Elizabethtown 15, Chatham 12
Chatham (2-2) led 3-0 after two innings before
Jenna Davis knocked in
Courtney Fitzsimons in the third with an RBI groundout to second. The Cougars would then score two in the fourth to go ahead 5-1.
After Phillips, named the Landmark Conference Softball Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, came on in relief, Elizabethtown (3-1) picked things up offensively, starting with the senior. She singled in
Ashley Mistichelli to make it 5-2.
Emily Polimeni made it a two-run fifth with her RBI ground out. Davis scored on the play and the Blue Jays were within two, 5-3, going into the sixth.
Lisa Scanlon's RBI groundout turned a 5-3 game into a 5-4 game in the sixth. Mistichelli followed with a base knock to center to bring home
Kaitlyn Witmer to tie the game. Then, with two on, Phillips hammered a double to left field that plated a pair and gave Elizabethtown a 7-5 lead going into the seventh.
Witmer drew a bases loaded walk to score
Kristen Aydelotte. The run was the first of eight in the seventh for the Jays. Scanlon, Mistichelli, Davis, Phillips, and Lark all had RBIs in the inning.
Chatham made it interesting in the bottom half and got within three, 15-12, but Rife got the final three outs to give Etown the win.
Phillips was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs. Lark and Mistichelli each had two hits.
Cierra Kunkle got the start, her first for Elizabethtown, and struck out two in 3.1 innings of work.
Game 2: Elizabethtown 9, Finlandia 1 (F/6)
Finlandia (0-4) got ahead of the Blue Jays in the first with one run, though Etown got it right back.
After giving up a pair of hits in the first inning, Rife shut down the Lions. She did not allow a hit through the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. The offense came alive late in support of the junior making her first career start for the Blue & Gray.
Polimeni singled through the left side to score
Grace Hussey and give Elizabethtown a 2-1 lead.
Hussey drove in
Kadyn Crisswell in the sixth with an RBI groundout to second. Fitzsimons brought home
Olivia Prosser with an RBI single to center. Polimeni added her second and third RBIs of the game with a double down the left field line. The Jays led 6-1 after Polimeni's extra base hit.
Gillian Toomey had her first two career hits in the game, including an RBI triple in the sixth to make it 7-1. Crisswell ended things with her two-RBI double to left center.
Megan Thomas and Toomey scored on the hit as the Blue Jays won it in six, 9-1.
Rife went six strong innings with only three hits given up and four strikeouts and just the one earned run.
Elizabethtown has Tuesday off before another pair of games on Wednesday, March 2.
