Dunbar Gem Propels Blue Jays to First Win of the Season

DEMOREST, Ga. - Graduate student Tyler Dunbar pitched eight strong innings leading the Elizabethtown College baseball team to the 8-3 victory over Piedmont Sunday night.

With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Lions fall to 5-3-1.

Senior Robbie Bertucio, Junior Ben Watson, and sophomore Bryce Keller each finished with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Freshman RJ Agriss and senior Joey Thomas tallied two runs score apiece. Senior James Vito registered the one extra base hit for Etown, a RBI double. 

Junior Hunter Cain paced Piedmont with two RBI.

With the score tied at two heading to the top of the third, the Blue Jays opened up the scoring. With one out and runners on first and second, Keller stepped in and knocked an RBI single to move Etown ahead 3-2. Watson then came across to score as Thomas reached on an error in the next at bat putting runners on the corner. After Vito popped out Bertucio laced an RBI single to increase the Blue Jays' lead to 6-2. Junior Justin Wetzel completed the scoring for Etown, reaching on a error that plated Thomas to bring the score to 7-2.

The Blue Jays scored one more run on an RBI double by Vito in the seventh and allowed one unearned run by Piedmont to take the opener of the three game series, 8-2.

Dunbar (1-1) pitched eight innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters. He is tied for fifth in the Landmark with 10 strikeouts. Junior Zach Silfies pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two batters. 

Freshman Bodie Eilertson (0-1) took the loss for the Lions, allowing seven runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out six.

Elizabethtown is right back to it tomorrow for a doubleheader against Piedmont. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
