CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team fell to Lasell, 3-1, and Elms, 3-0, in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.
With the two losses, the Blue Jays slip to 10-5 on the season.
Junior
Blake Hildebrand combined for a team-high 25 kills between the two matches. Sophomore
Nick Chapman compiled 19 total kills, including 12 in Etown's opening match against the Blazers. Junior
Dan Barckholtz had 34 assists in the first match and sophomore
Nate Seeger had 32 in the second.
The Blue Jays came out strong against Lasell, taking a three point lead after a kill from junior
Steve Swain made the score 9-6. Etown continued to hold a three point lead before pushing its advantage to five (19-14) after back-to-back points capped off by a kill from Chapman. The Blue Jays road this momentum to the finish, taking the first set 25-19.
After the Lasers took set two, the third set was pushed to 30 points. Trailing 26-25, Etown grabbed the next two points after an ace from Barckholtz made the score 27-26, setting up game point. The seesaw continued as Lasell grabbed game point before a Hildebrand kill tied the score at 28 once again. This, however, would be the final deadlock of the third set as the Lasers grabbed the final two points to take the frame 30-28.
Lasell left little doubt in the fourth, running out to a 14-7 advantage on its way to the 25-11 win and the 3-1 victory in the final set.
In match two, the Blue Jays dropped set one before battling back in the second. Tied at eight, Etown rattled off three consecutive points capped off by an ace from Hildebrand, giving the Blue Jays an 11-8 lead. Etown continued to lead throughout the frame taking its advantage all the way to 23-21 after an attack error by the Blazers. Elms, however, responded in a big way scoring the final four points of the set to take the 2-0 lead with the 25-23 win.
The Blue Jays grabbed back the momentum at the start of the third set, racing out to a 10-6 lead after Chapman and junior
Tony Camillo combined for a block. The Blazers rallied, using a 7-0 run to grab the 13-10 advantage. Etown closed back within one at 13-12Â after a kill by Hildebrand and then again at 15-14 but were unable to overtake the home team, as Elms completed the sweep 25-19.
Elizabethtown returns to Thompson on Friday March 4 against Messiah. Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.
