ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team fell to Marymount, 3-0, Friday night in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) action.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 10-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play, while the Saints sit at 16-1 overall and 2-1 in the CVC.
Junior
Cheston Jacobs paced Etown, hitting .778 with seven kills on nine attempts. Classmate
Blake Hildebrand finished with eights kills and hit .421, while junior
Steve Swain tallied a team-high nine kills, a .304 hitting percentage and seven digs. Junior
Dan Barckholtz dished out 26 assists and junior
Tony Camillo racked up three block assists.
Marymount hit .494 as a unit led by senior Ervin Harrell's 17 kills.
The Blue Jays battled through the early going in the first set, tying the match at 10 after a kill by Swain. The Saints took a three point lead at 15-12, but Hildebrand cut the deficit back to two after a kill. Marymount continued to hold on to it lead and increased it to five at 21-16 before Etown made one last effort, scoring back-to-back points to make the score 21-18. The Saints, however, would wrap up the set with four of the final five points for the 25-19 win and the early 1-0 advantage.
Marymount continued to hold onto the momentum at the beginning of the second set, running out to a 10-4 lead. The Saints continued to press, stretching its advantage to nine (18-9), on its way to the 25-18 victory in the second set.
Down 7-5 in the third set, the Blue Jays brought the frame back to even after a kill from Camillo and an ace from Barckholtz. Marymount, however, used a 9-2 run to move in front 16-9 and carried that seven point advantage to the end, earning the sweep with the 25-18 win.
Elizabethtown is right back to it tomorrow, February 26 with a tri-match against Lasell and Elms in Chicopee, Mass. Opening serve against Lasell is 3 p.m. followed by the Blue Jays' second match of the night against Elms at 5 p.m.
