Cardinals beat Blue Jays in Landmark semifinal

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Beating a good team like Catholic is tough to do even once, but the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team did it twice this season. However, the third time did not go the Jays' way as the Cardinals beat Etown 70-52 in their Landmark semifinal matchup Wednesday evening at Thompson Gymnasium.

Catholic, ranked 25th in the latest WBCA Division III poll, got off to an 8-0 start to begin the game. Veronica Christ got Elizabethtown (20-5) on the board with a jumper followed up by Summer McNulty's three to make it 11-5.

The Cardinals continued to their torrid start to the first, keeping the lead at nine points and as many as 11. They led 19-9 after one.

Jessica King got Etown going right away in the second with her and-one play at the basket. Two possessions later, Emily Prowell drained a three and the Blue Jays were within four at 19-15. A few minutes later, Prowell grabbed an offensive board, one of 18 offensive rebounds for EC, and went back up for two more. Catholic (20-4), who still hadn't scored through three-plus minutes of the second, found themselves tied after Prowell found King in the paint for a pair and it was 19-19 with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.

Christ and Prowell hit back-to-back threes for the Jays and gave them their first lead, 25-23, with 4:33 to go before half. The Cardinals finished the half on an 8-0 run to take a 31-25 lead.

This time it was Catholic who held Elizabethtown scoreless through the first couple minutes. The Cardinals built their lead back up to 11 before DaniRae Renno's layup off her own miss. Christ, who had eight of her team-high 15 in the third, got the Blue Jays within two possession and as close as five with less than two to play in the third.

Down 10 late in the third, Cyleigh Wilson knocked down a shot from the outside to make it seven, but Amelia Baldo quickly raced the length of the court to get two points back and send the Cardinals into the fourth with a nine-point lead.

The Blue Jays fought as King and McNulty combined for the first eight points for Etown in the fourth, but they couldn't sustain any type of run to close in on Catholic. Every time Elizabethtown would hit, CATHU had an answer.

Prowell's free throw made it a 57-49 game with 2:56 left, but from there, Catholic would knock down their free throws to increase their advantage and claim the semifinal victory that sends them to Saturday's championship.

Christ finished with a team-high 15 points in her final game at Thompson Gymnasium. King had a team-best 10 rebounds and five blocks, while Prowell hit a pair of treys to lead the Blue Jays.
