Arcadia escapes with one-goal win over women's lacrosse

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Hannah Cressman had a game-high seven points for the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team in Saturday's tight 11-10 loss to Arcadia in the season opener. Cressman finished with a hat trick alongside four assists. Kate Ziegler had a team-high four goals for the Blue Jays. Alayna Trynosky and Rachel Murphy combined to make 16 saves as each played a half's worth of action.

Arcadia (1-0) grabbed an early lead with a goal in the first minute of play, but Cressman tied things up at 1-1 just 30 seconds later for the Jays. Then, after Anna Charitonchick's goal 17 seconds after Cressman's, Elizabethtown (0-1) took a 2-1 lead.

There would be another three ties and a lead change before the end of the half. Cressman found Ziegler for her first of the game with 2:26 left in the first, which returned the lead back to EC after Ashley Starkey's first of four in the game for the Knights.

Starkey scored consecutive goals to level the score with little time left in the first and then gave Arcadia the lead 1:06 into the second, 4-3. Cressman would knot things up at 4-4 a few minutes later with her second goal of the contest. The final two goals of the half went to AU and they went into the half ahead by two, 6-4.

Despite being down a player, Arcadia really put the pressure on Etown with two goals in that time. Ziegler got one back for the Jays as Megan Gress found the graduate student for her second of the day.

Down 9-5, Sam Deiaco, Kendall Ulmer (UP), and Ziegler recorded consecutive goals to bring Elizabethtown back within a goal. For Ulmer, it was her first collegiate goal in her debut game. Cressman had assists on two of the three goals that came over a six and a half minute span of the third. Arcadia responded with two to end the third quarter and took an 11-8 lead into the fourth.

Murphy, who played the second and fourth quarters for the Blue Jays, did not allow a goal in the fourth to give her offense the chance to get back the three-goal difference. Cressman and Ziegler were able to help one another score in the fourth quarter, but the Knights were able to hold on and deny Etown the chance to force overtime as time ran out.

Madison Hennelly had a team-high two caused turnovers and Katie Mackey grabbed three ground balls for Elizabethtown. Trynosky made nine saves in goal for the Jays while Murphy finished with seven.

The women's lacrosse team travels to Immaculata on Wednesday, February 23.
