ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It's been 10 up and 10 down in 2022 for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team as they improved to 10-0, the program's best start since the 1986-87 season.
Summer McNulty poured in a game and career-high 29 points on a career-best 12 made field goals in a 64-50 win over Muskingum.
Lindsay Boyd was also in double figures for Etown with a career-high 12 points.
Muskingum (4-7) led early but Boyd hit consecutive shots from the field, a trey and a fast break layup off her steal, to put the Jays in front, 5-2.
The Fighting Muskies hung around, though Elizabethtown (10-0) got some separation in the final half of the first quarter. McNulty drilled a jumper and
Kaeli Romanowski's fast break bucket made it 13-7 a little more than halfway through the first. Romanowski's defensive play led to two foul shots near the end of the quarter. She converted both and was 4-for-4 in the game and led the Blue Jays with three steals.
Anna Lippiatt sank a jumper as time expired to make it 18-12 at the end of one.
Four quick points in the second had the Muskies within two, but Etown responded with a run to provide some breathing room over the remainder of the second. They would outscore Muskingum 20-7 after giving up the first four points and held the visitors scoreless for nearly three minutes.
Boyd knocked down a shot from the outside and McNulty sank another jumper to extend their lead to nine, but Lippiatt answered with a three to cut the deficit to six. McNulty had nine straight points as Etown went up by nine, 32-23 with 3:22 left in the second, after her three-pointer.
Taylor Huyck pushed that lead into double digits with 1:13 left in the half. Romanowski knocked down two at the charity stripe and
Cass Peris hit a tough layup with a defender on her with time running out and the Blue Jays went into the break ahead by 15, 38-23.
The Jays won the third quarter, outscoring the Muskies 16-12 to increase their lead to 19 by the fourth quarter, 54-35.
McNulty had six of the first eight points in the fourth for Elizabethtown, including her basket with 5:29 to go that gave her a new career-high of 27 and her 11th made shot of the game. She would add one more to her total to finish with a game-high 29.
Jessica King received a pass at the left elbow and found McNulty down low. Her left-handed layup was good to make it 60-38 at the time.
Muskingum didn't go away, however. A 10-0 run suddenly made it a 12-point game with 3:04 remaining. Who else but McNulty to answer the call and break a near four-minute scoreless drought for the Jays.
Etown would hold its double digit lead to make it not only 10 straight wins to start the season, but 10 straight double-digit victories. King had a team-high 11 rebounds while Romanowski grabbed nine off the bench. Claudia Harrington had 11 points to lead Muskingum.
Elizabethtown will begin the 2023 portion of the schedule at Stevenson on Monday, January 2, at 7 p.m.
