Women's basketball pulls away from Washington & Lee to win Yonnie Kauffman Blue Jay Tournament title

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Tied at the half, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to win the Yonnie Kauffman Blue Jay Tournament title over Washington & Lee on their home court by a final of 80-68. Summer McNulty led four starters in double figures with 25 and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. DaniRae Renno was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Jessica King recorded a double-double and Cyleigh Wilson added 16 for the Jays in the win.

It was back and forth between the two teams, with neither side leading by more than two points through the first six minutes of action. The lead changed hands five times in the span of a minute. Renno broke a 3-3 tie with a layup before Hanna Malik's three put Washington & Lee (7-3) ahead by one. Then, McNulty drilled a jumper as Elizabethtown (9-0) retook the lead, but only momentarily as Sarah Zimmerman knocked down a jumper in the lane. Renno returned the lead back to Etown with another layup on King's assist.

Later in the first, Lindsay Boyd found Kaeli Romanowski for the layup inside with 34 seconds left. A three from W&L tied it up, but King closed out the quarter with a buzzer-beater floater. The Blue Jays led 20-18 after one.

Makenna Mummert and King helped build that lead up to six early in the second. The Generals came back with an 11-0 run to go ahead by five, 29-24. King ended Etown's scoreless drought, grabbing one of her 11 rebounds and going back up for two. Malik would hit another three that had W&L up by six, but a big three at the other end from Wilson negated it to bring the deficit back down to one possession.

McNulty hit back-to-back jumpers for the Jays and Cass Peris sank hers from the right corner to give Elizabethtown the lead back. The teams went back and forth once again in the final minute and a half as they traded the lead once again. Wilson had the final five points of the second for the Jays, first convering on the fast break after Peris' steal and then knocking down another three with 30 seconds to go. The teams went into the half tied at 40-40.

Washington & Lee freshman Mary Schleusner, an All-Tournament Team selection for the Generals, got her team ahead right away with consecutive baskets. W&L held onto the lead briefly, but free throws by King put the Jays up by a point, 49-48.

Etown surged near the end of the quarter, kick started by Romanowski's assist to Wilson with 2:53 remaining. Then, McNulty set up Renno in the paint for two. After Schleusner responded with a jumper, Renno was good from down low again and a possession later Wilson drained a three to double the lead to six points, 58-52.

Romanowski hit a pair at the line with 27 left in the third, and Peris forced a turnover that wound up with Wilson getting fouled and going to the line with a second to go. She would split the pair, but the Jays would take a nine point lead into the fourth.

While the Blue Jays are prepped to go, go go, the took the air out of the ball in the fourth and worked to make it more of a half court game. Romanowski provided a spark off the bench, tying for a team-high with four fouls drawn. Her free throws 56 seconds into the fourth made it an 11-point game.

Everytime W&L tried to get the momentum and work their way back, Elizabethtown always had an answer. All six of their made field goals in the fourth quarter were in the paint. Etown was also 10-for-14 at the foul line in the second half.

The Generals got as close as seven with 6:20 left in the game, but couldn't get any closer as Etown slowly rebuilt the lead back into double digits and keep it there.

McNulty finished the game with 25 points, including 14 in the first half. King's double-double included 16 points and 11 rebounds (7 offensive). Wilson also had 16 points and three treys plus a team-high four assists. Renno added 12 points and five rebounds.

Elizabethtown improved its record to 9-0, winning its first nine games for the first time since 2013-14.

The Blue Jays will host Muskingum on Friday, December 30, at 1 p.m.
