Women's basketball dominates second half to score big win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College shot over 60 percent from the field in the second half as they took an eight-point halftime lead and blew it up to finish with a 42-point victory at McDaniel Tuesday night in their season opener. DaniRae Renno led all scorers with 20 in the game, topping last year's blowout win over the Green Terror for the biggest win to start a season since 2013.

Elizabethtown (1-0) got out to a fast start as they built a 17-0 lead by the 3:51 mark of the first quarter. All five starters, Renno, Summer McNulty, Jessica King, Cyleigh Wilson, and Lindsay Boyd, added to the run to put the Jays comfortably in front as they led 21-9 after one.

The second quarter was a different story as McDaniel (0-1) worked its way back into the game while holding Etown to 30 percent from the floor after they had hit on 50 percent of their shots in the opening quarter. The Green Terror outscored the Blue Jays 17-13 to get within eight points by the half.

From the get-go in the third quarter, it was all Elizabethtown. McNulty assisted on back-to-back Renno layups early in the third quarter as the lead teetered with double figures. King's jumper and Wilson's three gave Etown a 14-point lead with a little over half the quarter to go.

McDaniel never got closer than 12 as the Jays began to pull away, seemingly hitting everything at the offensive end. Kaeli Romanski's jumper pushed the advantage to 20 late in the third before hitting on another jumper a possession later.

The Jays' relentlessness did not stop after three quarters. They ratcheted up the pressure and held the Green Terror to just two fourth quarter points. Makenna Mummert opened up the fourth with a made layup on the first possession. Then, Taylor Huyck drilled a three, and on the next possession, Renno knocked down a pair at the line with the lead now up to 24.

Romanski and Mummert continued to pump in the points as it reached a 30-plus-point advantage for Elizabethtown with half the quarter to play. Allyia Kennedy also scored her first points for the Jays with three in the fourth. Georgia Panapoulos knocked down a jumper late in the game and Clare Marchese, Cass Peris, Ellie Fasick, and Megan Desmet all contributed to the win for Etown.

Wilson had 12 points on four treys while McNulty and King each had 10 apiece. King had a team-high nine rebounds while Boyd recorded four steals defensively.

The women's basketball team will take part in the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament at Franklin & Marshall this coming weekend. The Blue Jays face Lycoming in the opening game on Saturday, November 12, at 1 p.m.
