Blue Jays Improve to 4-0 with Two Victories Over Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's volleyball team recorded back-to-back sweeps over Saint Vincent Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the two win, the Blue Jays improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Bearcats fall to 0-5 overall. It is the first time in program history Elizabethtown has started a season 4-0.

Junior Blake Hildebrand combined for 17 kills on the day. Dan Barckholtz finished the afternoon with 29 assists, including 22 in the second match. Junior Cheston Jacobs notched eight block assists with five in match two. The five block assists and total blocks are both career-highs for Jacobs.

After dominating the opening set in match one, 25-8, Elizabethtown used a quick 6-0 spurt in the middle of the second to take a 12-4 lead. The Blue Jays road this burst to the second frame, 25-16.

Elizabethtown completed the opening match victory in convincing fashion, running out to a seven point lead (14-7) after an ace from junior Steve Swain on its way to the 25-13 third set win.

It was more of the same in the second match as the Blue Jays took the first two sets to set up its second sweep of the day. In the third stanza, Etown rolled out to a 12-3 lead capped off by a kill from Hildebrand. Saint Vincent closed within five (13-8) but the Blue Jays opened up its advantage again to 20-12 after a block by Jacobs and sophomore Cody Boyer. Elizabethtown road that momentum to the 25-15 victory in set three to complete the second sweep of the day.

The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, February 5 with tri-match against Eastern and Drew. Elizabethtown opens the day against Eastern at 12 p.m. followed by Drew at 4 p.m.
