Blue Jays pull away from Stevenson in second half

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Cyleigh Wilson hit another five three-pointers for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team, only this time she didn't need to drill three in the final minute. The Blue Jays pulled away from Stevenson in the second half at Thompson Gym Monday night and remained undefeated against the Mustangs all-time with a 65-50 win. Veronica Christ had a game-high 16 points while Wilson added 15.

It was a slow start for both teams to begin the New Year as they shot a combined 8-for-33 in the first quarter. Elizabethtown (9-2) held a slim 11-8 lead going into the second quarter.

Stevenson (4-7) shot better in the second and outscored the Blue Jays, but only by a point. Cassandra Peris pump faked an oncoming defender and went to the basket, made the layup as she was fouled, and then knocked down the ensuing free throw to give Etown its biggest lead of the quarter at five, 25-20.

The Mustangs split a pair at the foul line and then created a turnover with three seconds left in the half. Maleah Smith converted the turnover into two points as she banked in her jumped as time expired to make it a 25-23 game at the break.

Wilson, who had hit on one three in the first half, hit some timely treys for the Blue Jays in the third quarter. Her first broke a 27-27 tie, and then a few minutes later as Etown trailed by a point, the sophomore put her team back in front with another. Christ hit her lone three of the game with 2:15 left in the third that pushed the lead to four points, 40-36. Christ and DaniRae Renno helped the Jays closed the quarter on a 9-5 run to take a 46-38 lead into the fourth.

Jillian Nagy's steal at the defensive end on Stevenson's first possession of the final period led to Taylor Huyck's fastbreak layup at the other end that made it a double-digit lead, 48-38, and that's where it would stay the rest of the way. Summer McNulty was part of a 9-2 run to start the fourth as her three made it a 15-point advantage with 7:15 to go.

Emily Prowell's pair at the foul line gave Elizabethtown its biggest lead of the game at 20, 62-42, with 3:40 remaining in regulation. The Blue Jays shot 62 percent in the second half on 16-for-26 shooting and were 6-for-7 from beyond the arc to assist in pulling away from the Mustangs.

Renno was the third Etown player in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. Jessica King also had eight boards for the Jays. Nagy dished out a team-high five assists in the win.

Elizabethtown is scheduled to play at Drew in a return to Landmark play on Saturday, January 8, at 4 p.m.
